What is Green Social Prescribing?
Green Social Prescribing is a way of linking people to outdoor, nature-based activities that can help with physical or mental health and general wellness. You will sometimes see these activities called “nature-based health interventions.”
Spending time outdoors can help with physical health and mental health. It can help people who are living with one or more long-term conditions as well as help with issues around general well-being such as difficulty sleeping.
It does not require physical exercise. In some cases just sitting and observing may be enough.
A green social prescription may be offered by a GP or other person working in a medical practice.
It may contain a recommendation for one or more outdoor activities to be done by yourself.
It may connect you with a local community group offering a nature-based activity.
It may give you a referral to another NHS professional who can provide more extensive help and support.
There are many outdoor activities that can be prescribed. Some may be as simple as a recommendation to spend more time outside. Others may include a programme of events over several weeks such as gardening or walking groups that are organised by a local group.
