Glossary of terms

Some common terms we use are:

Green space: all kinds of natural places from parks or gardens to beaches or countryside footpaths.

Blue spaces: spaces featuring natural water such as beaches, lakes or rivers.

Nature: the physical world collectively, including plants, animals, the landscape, and other features and products of the earth including blue and green space.

Green social prescribing: this is a way of linking people to outdoor, nature-based activities to support their health and wellbeing. Activities might include walks, gardening or simply spending time in nature either in a group or alone.

Nature-based health intervention (NBHI): An NBHI is a programme or strategy that engages people with nature to improve their health and wellbeing. Common NBHIs include community gardens and outdoor walking groups.

Nature-based social prescribing (NBSP): a general term for a form of social prescribing that involves activities in nature.

Nature-based provider: providers of Nature-based health interventions (NBHI).

Link worker: a health professional usually employed in primary care who connects people to services in the community.
